Default What do artists play?

Alot of the success between player and profession depends on the style of play. The way you think, act and react can decide what kind of character you feel most comfortable with in GW. So, here's a question for all the artists: What's your main character's profession?

Do you think this style of play is easier for you because of your artistic thought process?

Also, artists, what professions do you find yourself getting more requests to draw? I can say I have never drawn an assassin, and that the most common requests have been mesmers and rangers.

Am I still allowed to answer even though I don't do commissions?

My main profession is dervish. And no, I don't think the art part of my brain has any connection to that choice. I chose it because they were the only way I could have a character with hair like my own RL hair. Though I suppose...well...I chose to be a dagger-wielding-dervish simply because it looks much cooler, but I don't think you have to be an artist to appreciate a character's looks.

Not sure if I count anymore, but this is an interesting thread.

My favorite profession and the one I play the most is my monk. Not sure why I continue to play her but she is my favorite. I think this choice basically depends on your own taste then what has to do with anything artistic. Also it could depend on experiance between playing different professions. This was the first profession I played when I first started and I just continued to play. I do play other professions, mesmer is close second.

And most profession that i got requested the most was mesmers...which I'm sure everyone knows why

Warrior and Assassin is my mains...not really artistically inclined as a playing style, but i like armor that has some taste to it regardless (but that is with any class)

I am not physically artistic (can't draw, or open canvas worth crap anymore) but if i was, i could imagine poses and composed "portraits" or action shots of my characters.

I would ask someone to draw it for me, but they would never in a million years get it to look the way i can see it in my mind :P

I have always been intrigued by Necromancers and Mages,my Main is a Necromancer.

I was drawn into mystical things like this from early exposure to fantasy movies and books.I can specifically remember being immersed in the old Savage Sword of Conan magazines, admiring the art of Joe Jusko and Armando Gil...and furiously re-drawing their work as close as I could.

Artistically I don't think that has any impact at all towards what I choose to play or how I choose...I am interested though,in other people "take" on something that interests me.

Being an actual graduate of many "Art" and "Art related" courses does not hold any sway on my decision on what character I make or how I play it,I play soley for the escapism aspect and interaction with a global community (however rare that actually is in my case)..be it whatever class.

My first character was a necro, but my main is a warrior. Infact i hardly play any of my alts.

I like being the leader, and tumping stuff really fast with attack speed buffs.

I wouldn't link my choice to my artistic side, it's just the class i have most fun playing as. Although saying that, he does look the coolest of all my chars.

the profession i play mostly is warrior. If i had to link my choice to an artistic side its probably because i choose to draw mostly large over the top mosters, superheroes and heavily armored robots.

My favourite is Ritualist, because I like the designs and overall theme of the profession. They're not something that you see in every gazillion junk fantasy book/game/art and I like the somewhat "savage" look to them. For me the looks of a character are very important, and thus I always end up rerolling Survivors if I don't like the hair.

And not surprisingly, I've mostly drawn Mesmers . Some drawing competitions certainly have nothing to do with it...

I'm a musician by trade, which could still be counted as an artist

My main character is a Mesmer.

Does the way I think make this profession easier to play for me? I think it probably does. I'm used to working with several different different lines of sound that dance around each other, and knowing on some instinctual level what to expect next. I guess you could compare that to a group of monsters in PvE, with each enemy profession taking its own line in the score, and the music of enemies becoming more complex as the game goes on (monsters in presearing might be playing Chopsticks, while the monsters in DoA might be playing Stravinsky's Rite of Spring).

The Mesmer is the conductor that keeps the enemy orchestra playing the tune that your party wants to hear. If there's too much flute (enemy healing), the Mesmer stops the flutes (disables the enemy healers). If there's too much trombone (enemy melee) the Mesmer tells the trombonist to try again with a mute in the bell (casts an anti-attack hex). And so on and so forth.

I have no idea if all that made any sense to anyone other than myself, but it shows the way I think while playing

I play a monk, and I just love her, I began with ranger, its like a tradition to me start any game with ranged weapon characters, after being stuck at thk for 3 months (can you believe that XD) made my monk, and all my remaining characters get to gather dust.

I don't think it has anything to do with being artistic... more with what you like. I've played every profession, except for mesmer (other than getting a few to lvl 15 or playing in the arena). My very first and favorite for a while was the elementalist. But I enjoy monk, ranger, ritualist, elementalist, and assassin. A lot of times, I'll get bored with one, and play the other. I personally like high damage amounts or something that does damage swiftly.

As far as looks, Ritualist wins hands down!

I began with a Necro (meleemancer ftw!) because I had hopes of a caster/swordsman. However, after realising that a sword wielding necro wasn't going to cut the mustard, I gave monk a try.

She has, since then, been my favorite and primary character

[Edit] As far as commissions go, judging from the many commissions I have done, mesmers are by far the most vain! :P Follwed closely by warriors. Necros and rangers are probably joint third.

Of all the other professions, none stick out as being requested more than others.

I play midline for my guild, and that generally encompasses all non-monk, non-runner casters, as well as paragons :P

*Raises hand* 'Nother Dervish here.

And so far the only two classes I *haven't* been asked to draw are Mesmer and Necro.

My main is a ranger, but I also love my ritualist, monk, necromancer, mesmer and assassin. Dervish is fun too. I think the only part of my playstyle affected by my artistic side is the fact that I like making new characters very much, and it always takes me some time to find the perfect hair/face combo. This is also the reason why I sometimes end up with several characters of the same profession for a while... Also, I have a character of every profession whom I play slowly through the game, and I've ended up rerolling some of them in the process just because I didn't like how they looked.

Oh yeah, and I also collect armor. Armor is pretty. <3 And I like taking screenies while playing as well. Actual gameplay and tactics aren't affected by my artsy side though.

I've drawn a whole bunch of rangers and mesmers. They are nice classes, but variety would be nice too...

I'm also very picky about my character appearance. So much so that I did a face reading study of my main to see if the features I choose meant anything about me. Surprisingly the reading was more accurate about me with my Dervish's face than with my own. I did a few other readings for people in my guild and they were pretty close too (considering I have never actually seen one of them in real life, it was pretty cool to think that his avatar might be a better representation of who he is than his actual physical self).

As with many others, my main is a necro.

I guess there's a sort of style or emphasis on why I chose her, but I wouldn't know how to explain. I enjoy just about all profs, except predominantly monk since it's entirely out of my "fighting style" and I havn't had patience for my Mesmer. I've also rerolled my Dervish, whom was made during the NF preview event...cause I didn't like how short she was. >_>;

As far as commission requests....90% have been necros (if not always in the dang 15k Luxon) a Dervish or 2 and a few Ritualists (which are so very much fun to draw!), but surprisingly nothing else. O_o;; It's odd to sit and think about it now. I've drawn my personal Warrior, but have yet to work on any other profession.

Well, I sorta like all my characters equally the same. But I suppose my Necro is the most played or such since he was made first.

Anyways, I slightly feel a bit artistic with my characters, trying to draw them from time to time, almost always messing up and wasting paper since my erasers always suck. And then I do my best to create my own builds, (go ahead and slap me if this is something stupid) artistically I think making builds can be, erm... artistic, since you must make the skills and attributes build upon one another, requiring thoughts and creativity to make your own unique builds. When you make a very unique, and powerful build, you just created a Mona Lisa, a masterpiece.

Going away from that before I embarrass myself further more; I find myself usually drawing RuneScape artwork, since I love the fact I can add my own personal details and touches to the crappy, simple armor of RuneScape. Then I find myself usually drawing my necro and a couple of rangers. No one has requested anything at all yet from me, all my school friends just say "draw this, or that" which isn't enough inspiration and imagination I can use for art.

Anyways, that is what I think...
